Hello everyone. This is Mr. Paul Kim, Ms. Sidell’s student teacher.
We’re a month away from the end of 3rd quarter, and ISAT testing is upon us. It’s going to be a tiring six days of testing, but that doesn’t mean the instruction stops. As student teacher I will teach two units to the students in Ms. Sidell's classroom.
7th and 8th graders will read and analyze the play about Helen Keller, The Miracle Worker. Students will benefit from both reading drama style text, and gaining awareness and appreciation of overcoming challenges put forth by physical disabilities. Students will regularly be assessed for comprehension and critical thinking of the play. As we read the play, the students will have the opportunity to watch the play as well. Students are still required and expected to read 45 minutes nightly and log their reading on to their logs.
We have started a new Poetry Unit that culminates in a poetry portfolio. All our students will have the opportunity to practice their writing regularly and be able to express their creativity in various ways as they learn all kinds of new poems. While they do so they follow clear expectations for Sustained Silent Writing time. Rubrics for SSW and for their poetry portfolios have been handed out and explained. As the units end, the students will have the opportunity to share and read off their poetry on stage for their fellow 8th graders.
During the six days of ISAT we have grammar practice and Word Wisdom vocabulary on hold. Once ISAT testing is over, we will go right back into instruction and practice on complex sentences, and continue instruction in Word Wisdom Unit 3.
Let’s wish our students the best of luck during ISAT, and give them our full support.
