I am excited to again be teaching 7th & 8th grade this year. During this quarter in reading, 7th & 8th grade students can expect to begin reviewing reading strategies, context clues, and genre. We will read poems, fiction short stories, and nonfiction articles. I will also begin teaching The Six Sign Posts of reading, which is based on brand new research from reading gurus, Kylene Beers and Robert Probst. Toward the second half of this quarter, 7th grade will be starting The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton while the 8th graders will delve into a science fiction unit.
Students should be reading and logging EVERY week night beginning the second week of school!
For 8th grade writing, students can expect to be doing more than just writing because each quarter will also require them to prepare a speech. We will begin this quarter with an "All About Me" PowerPoint presentation. The remainder of this quarter will be focused on the Personal Essay that will be critical for the high school application process.
In grammar, we will begin with a review of Four Line Grammar and then quickly begin to memorize the common perpositions using Preposition Songs.
I look forward to a productive 2012-2013 school year!
